Soul music is a music genre that originated in the US and combines elements of gospel music and rhythm and blues to produce a unique, distinctive stamp genre in music history. Soul Music is the product of ever evolving social conditions and a diversity of musical influences. It also traces its roots to four different sources: racial, geographical, historical and economical factors and the hard gospel vocal quartets of the 1940s and 1950s were big influences on major soul singers of the 1960s.
The 1950s recordings of Sam Cooke, Ray Charles (1954's "I Got A Woman") and James Brown are commonly considered the beginnings of soul music. However, Charles was very open in acknowledging the influence of Pilgrim Travelers vocalist Jesse Whitaker on his singing style. Another view has it that a decade would go by until Solomon Burke's early recordings for Atlantic Records codified the soul style; his early 1960s songs "Cry to Me", "Just Out of Reach" and "Down in the Valley" are considered classics of the genre.
Throughout the early sixties the most important epicenters for soul music were Chicago, Memphis and Detroit, with each developing their own distinctive styles and repertoires. Soul music came to describe a number of R&B-based music styles. The Stax record label in Memphis, which relied most heavily on gospel music and a call and response between the soloist and the chorus that which they believed produced the rawest sound, produced many Billboard hits. In Detroit, Tamla/Motown were busy combining polished songwriting, pop-oriented sounds, slick production, with a straightforward vocal delivery to evolve the genre's most commercial style of all. Music by Motown artists such as Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross did much to popularize what became known as the Motown sound, which sold millions of soul vinyl records. Chicago soul fell somewhere between the two with its main player being Curtis Mayfield. He termed his music 'Songs of Faith and Inspiration' and often included semi-religious overtones.
At the end of the '60s, soul began to diversify, splitting apart into different sub genres as artists like James Brown and Sly Stone developed funk while other artists developed slicker forms of soul. Although soul music has evolved, it has never gone away — not only did the music inform all of the R&B of the '70s, '80s, and '90s, there were always pockets of musicians around the world that kept performing traditional soul.
