Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career John Coltrane was a very sought after musician and he helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and later was at the forefront of free jazz. Many of jazz's elite musicians played with Coltrane, including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones, just to name a few.
The influence Coltrane has had on music spans many different genres and musicians and is immeasurable. The sax man has had a massive influence on jazz, both mainstream and avant-garde that began during his lifetime and continued to grow after his death. He is one of the most dominant influences on post-1960 jazz saxophonists and has inspired an entire generation of jazz musicians.
